Alyea Minter Pollard, a graduate student in Northwestern State University’s College of Nursing and Allied Health, received the Joe Ann Clark Graduate Nursing Education Award, presented by the Louisiana State Nurses Association.  The award was announced during the 12th annual Nightingale Gala sponsored by the Louisiana Nurses Foundation in Baton Rouge.  More than 300 nurses, their families and friends attended.  Katheryn Arterberry, assistant professor of nursing at NSU, was mistress of ceremonies.

NSU students compete in college theater festival

NSU students compete in college theater festival

Northwestern State University Theatre and Dance students participated in the annual Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival for Region 6 held at the Strand Theatre in Shreveport. This is the first time Northwestern has taken part in the Festival, according to Director of Musical Theatre Andrew Lewis.

Students performed scenes from fall productions of “Smokey Joe’s Café” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” as part of an evening of invited scenes.

La. youth can register for 2012 Hunter of the Year awards

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) and the Louisiana Outdoor Writers Association (LOWA) are encouraging hunters 15 years of age or younger to enter the 2012 Youth Hunter of the Year competition.

The contest requires youth hunters to submit a story about their hunting experience along with photographs of the hunt.  LDWF and LOWA will then select a male and female youth hunter of the year based upon the stories and photos that are received.

Bolton High team takes first in NSU Demon Math Classic

A team from Bolton High School won first place in Northwestern State University’s Demon Math Classic on Feb. 15.

The competition drew eight teams from around the region for a quiz-bowl style competition presented by NSU’s Department of Mathematics and Physical Sciences and Department of Engineering Technology and Computer Information Systems.

Kisatchie closes wilderness area for controlled burn

Kisatchie National Forest closed the Kisatchie Hills Wilderness Area of the Kisatchie Ranger District on Thursday until further notice for a controlled burn or “prescribed burn.” The Wilderness area is made up of 8,700 acres of forest with some of the most unusually steep and rugged terrain to be found in Louisiana.

La. gives youth 8-17 chance to hunt big game

Twenty youth hunters selected through a pre-season lottery application process for four deer hunts on Red River Wildlife Management Area enjoyed very good success, with seven of the 20 harvesting a deer. 

Four antlerless and three antlered deer were harvested.  In addition, six hunters had the opportunity to shoot, but missed their targets. Bears and hogs were also observed from stand locations by several youth hunters.
