Oct. 6, Lake D'Arbonne State Park, Farmerville - Take a Kid Mountain Biking, 9 a.m. In conjunction with the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA), the park will host a day in which kids ride a special trail set up just for them. All are encouraged to participate in the bike games and learn proper trail usage. Bike tune-ups will be performed by local bike shops. Oct. 13, Lake D'Arbonne State Park, Farmerville - Archaeology Day in the Park, 10 a.m. October is Archaeology month in Louisiana. This program will include two archaeologists from Union Parish that have given their time to researching mounds and primitive sites in the area. Oct. 15, Lake D'Arbonne State Park, Farmerville - Dutch Oven Cooking, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. The D'Arbonne Dutch Ovens Club holds cooking demonstrations for everyone and welcomes new cookers each month. Oct. 20, Lake D'Arbonne State Park, Farmerville - Regional Dutch Oven Gathering, 9 a.m. This program demonstrates the early pioneer cooking techniques and by using charcoal and firewood in the Dutch Ovens. Oct. 27, Mansfield State Historic Site, Mansfield - 19th Annual Ghosts of the Past Nighttime Battlefield Tour, 7:30-9:30 p.m. As part of a longstanding tradition, visitors will be led by candle lantern along the park battlefield trail after dark, where the horrors and aftermath of a Civil War battlefield will be revealed to them. Park staff and volunteers will be acting out various scenes such as burials, field surgery, sentries, and wounded soldiers, just to name a few. Is the battlefield haunted? Come see for yourself!
