"Smokey Joe's Cafe" opening at NSU theater

The Grammy Award winning musical revue "Smokey Joe's Cafe" is ready to hit the stage inside Theater West at Northwestern State University.

The show, presented by NSU Theater and Dance, features 39 different classic tunes from the 50's, 60's and 70's. Songs in the revue include 'Kansas City', 'Charlie Brown' and 'Hound Dog'. The show opened on Broadway in 1995 and had a run of over 2,000 performances.

A variety of shows coming to NSU Theater and Dance this season

Northwestern State University Theatre and Dance will present timeless classics as well as contemporary and original works during its 2012-13 season.

This season’s schedule includes Smokey Joe’s Café on Oct. 11-13 and 17-20, A Midsummer Night’s Dream on Nov. 7-10, Eleemosynary on Feb. 21-23 and Feb. 27 – March 2, West Side Story on March 20-23 and Revelations of Dance on April 19-20.

Natchitoches Tour of Homes to feature "Steel Magnolias" house

The home featured in the movie "Steel Magnolias" is one of the many homes in Natchitoches'  58th Annual Tour of Homes. The dates for this year's tour are October 13, 14 & 15. The event is hosted by  the Association for the Preservation of Historic Natchitoches and includes a Candlelight tour, a town tour, and a Cane River County tour.

A group of Northwestern State University students and faculty explored the cities, scenery and stunning natural beauty of Venezuela during a two-week trip abroad over the summer.

“Throughout the entire trip our group was able to experience a broad spectrum of Venezuelan geography, culture and peoples,” said Jim Crawford, assistant professor of Spanish, Department of Language and Communication.   “The trip was designed to give students a true glimpse of Venezuelan culture and its people and not just particularly the typical tourist experience.”

NSU student creates 2012 Festival of Lights poster

An oil painting by Northwestern State University student Anna Dieter of Natchitoches was chosen as this year's official poster for the Natchitoches Christmas Festival. The painting will be unveiled to the public at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9 at Dickens and Company, 516 Front St., sponsored by the City of Natchitoches and the Natchitoches Arts Council.

The painting is Dieter’s interpretation of this year’s Festival theme, “Louisiana Bicentennial.”
