NWLA Red Cross volunteers head to N. Carolina ahead of Hurricane Irene

On Wednesday, August 24th, two volunteers from the Northwest Louisiana Chapter of the American Red Cross will head to a staging area in North Carolina in the Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) for a possible disaster response from Hurricane Irene.

Volunteers Rachel Byrd of Shreveport and Lonzo Sheffield of Bossier City will be leaving in the ERV at 9am from the Red Cross chapter, located at 4221 Linwood Avenue in Shreveport.

Workshop for minority farmers and ranchers this Thursday

A workshop for minority farmers and ranchers will be held from 9 a.m. - noon on Thursday, August 25 at the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club, 2821 Greenwood Road in Shreveport.

The workshop is called "Disadvantaged but Not Forgotten". New resources will be shared concerning the Farm Services Agency (FSA), Rural Development (RD) and Natural Resources and Conservation Services (NRCS). The interactive workshop will offer information to help minority farmers and ranchers with growth opportunities.

LifeShare Blood Centers will hold a blood drive on the campus of Northwestern State University in conjunction with the beginning of the Fall semester. The LifeShare bus will be parked in the pedestrian walkway between Kyser Hall and Williamson Hall from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22-Wednesday, Aug. 24. DeSoto Parish family creates endowed scholarship at Northwestern State University

Northwestern State University has a new endowed scholarship for a junior or senior enrolled in the school's Department of of Family and Consumer Sciences.

The scholarship is in honor of DeSoto Parish native Mary Leigh Marshall Gallaspy. Scholarship preferances will go first to a student from DeSoto Parish and second from Sabine Parish.

Final sign-ups this weekend for Springhill/North Webster soccer teams

Final sign-ups for the fall soccer season is this weekend for Springhill, LA and the surrounding areas. Sign-up times will be at the S. Main Mall from 2-6 p.m. on Friday, August 19 and 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 20. The cost is $50 for the first player in each family and $40 for each additional player.
