Grambling State University to host Port City Gala

All alumni, associates and friends of Grambling State University (GSU) are invited to attend Grambling State’s Port City Gala featuring performances by alumnae and R&B Sensation Mary Griffin, Country Artist Miko Marks, and the GSU Show Band. The gala will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 2 in the Captain Shreve Ballroom at the Shreveport Convention Center. VIP tickets are $110 per person. Regular tickets are $75 per person. Workshop for minority farmers and ranchers this Thursday

A workshop for minority farmers and ranchers will be held from 9 a.m. - noon on Thursday, August 25 at the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club, 2821 Greenwood Road in Shreveport.

The workshop is called "Disadvantaged but Not Forgotten". New resources will be shared concerning the Farm Services Agency (FSA), Rural Development (RD) and Natural Resources and Conservation Services (NRCS). The interactive workshop will offer information to help minority farmers and ranchers with growth opportunities.

27th annual Lumberjack Festival in Springhill

Springhill will once again host the 27th annual two-day Lumberjack Festival, at the Frank Anthony Park in Springhill.

This year’s festival will begin on Friday, October 7 at noon, with entertainment for the opening ceremonies provided by the North Webster high school “Marching Band of Armour”. The day will be filled with performances by local entertainers, culminating with a country music event at 7:00 p.m. headlined by J.J. Johns, a European chart-busting star from Silves, Portugal.

Saturday’s events will begin at 10:00 a.m.

The Natchitoches Events Center will host Northwestern State University's Scholarship Auction 2011, which supports student-athletes. The event begins at 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 27.

Final sign-ups this weekend for Springhill/North Webster soccer teams

Final sign-ups for the fall soccer season is this weekend for Springhill, LA and the surrounding areas. Sign-up times will be at the S. Main Mall from 2-6 p.m. on Friday, August 19 and 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 20. The cost is $50 for the first player in each family and $40 for each additional player.

The DeSoto Regional Health System Foundation has begun preparations for its ninth annual gala and silent auction, the Magnolia Ball.  The date for the underwater-themed event is Saturday, October 1, 2011 at the David B. Means Memorial 4-H Center in Mansfield, Louisiana.

NSU to honor employees with 40 years of service to school

Four Northwestern State University employees will be honored next week in recognition of 40 years of service to the university. Northwestern will recognize John Coutee of Watson Library, Associate Professor of History John Price, Paula Robertson of the Office of Financial Aid and Coordinator of Academic Affairs Mary Margaret Shivers at the annual Faculty-Staff luncheon Wednesday, Aug. 17.
