Bolton High team takes first in NSU Demon Math Classic

A team from Bolton High School won first place in Northwestern State University’s Demon Math Classic on Feb. 15.

The competition drew eight teams from around the region for a quiz-bowl style competition presented by NSU’s Department of Mathematics and Physical Sciences and Department of Engineering Technology and Computer Information Systems.

Twenty youth hunters selected through a pre-season lottery application process for four deer hunts on Red River Wildlife Management Area enjoyed very good success, with seven of the 20 harvesting a deer. 

Four antlerless and three antlered deer were harvested.  In addition, six hunters had the opportunity to shoot, but missed their targets. Bears and hogs were also observed from stand locations by several youth hunters.

Rachel Pair of Fort Smith, Ark., earned Northwestern State University’s Student Research Award during the school’s 26th annual Research Day on Thursday, Feb. 21. 

Pair was among dozens of students who participated in a day of 15-minute oral presentations, demonstrations and musical performances with question and answer sessions.  Pair’s topic, entitled “Use It Up, Wear It Out, Make It Do!:  The Fashion of the World War II Era,” examined the influence the war and societal changes played in American women’s fashion from the 1930s through the 1950s.

For Milovan Paz, few experiences match the opportunity to perform music. Paz, a junior music performance major at Northwestern State University, will be one of three student winners of the NSU Concerto Competition who will perform Monday with the Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Orchestra.

The orchestra will present “The Thrill of the Orchestra” in two concerts Monday in Magale Recital Hall. A Young Person’s Concert for area schoolchildren will be presented at 9:30 a.m. and a concert as part of the regular symphony schedule at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Douglas Bakenhus will conduct the orchestra.

NSU to offer ACT prep course

Northwestern State University’s Office of Electronic and Continuing Education will offer an ACT prep course beginning Saturday, March 9. The class will be from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturdays through April 6 in South Hall on NSU’s Natchitoches campus.  The fee for the class is $189 which includes materials.

Natchitoches artists Matt DeFord and Danny Brockner are in the process of installing a collaborative piece of public art on the city’s downtown riverbank near the Roque House.

Located on the north end of Rue Beauport, the piece entitled “Riviére a travers la pierre” is one of the first that officials hope will enhance the rich landscape of Natchitoches’ downtown historic landmark district and engage pedestrians in public art displays. 

NSU to host Spring Cheerleading Clinic

NSU to host Spring Cheerleading Clinic

Northwestern State University will host its Spring Cheerleading Clinic Saturday, Feb. 23, for participants in Pre-K through 12th grade.  Participants are invited to attend as a squad or as an individual and will be divided into age groups.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. in the Health and Human Performance Building. Participants will perform duringhalftime of the Northwestern State basketball game. Participants will receive a t-shirt, snack and a fun-filled day with the Northwestern State cheerleaders. Participantswill receive private coaching, if desired.
