NSU scholarship to honor alumna killed in traffic accident

A scholarship honoring the memory of Melinda Martin McClung has been established at Northwestern State University by McClung’s co-workers in the university’s Registrar’s Office.  McClung was a Northwestern State alumna and worked in the Registrar’s Office for over 22 years.  She was killed in a traffic accident on March 24.

The Melinda Martin McClung Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a student transferring into Northwestern State with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or better.

Contributions to the scholarship can be made payable to the NSU Foundation and mailed to 535 University Parkway, Natchitoches, La., 71497. A notation should be made that the donation is for the Melinda Martin McClung Scholarship.

La. State Police to join DEA in prescription drug take back initiative

The Louisiana State Police (in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration) will participate in the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday in an effort to help local residents rid their homes of potentially dangerous prescription drugs.

Expired, unused, and unwanted medications may be brought for disposal from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday to the Louisiana State Police troop location nearest you. This service is free and anonymous and is a great opportunity for those who have accumulated unwanted or unused prescription drugs to dispose of them safely.

A Louisiana student won first place in her grade category for her art work in recognition of National Endangered Species Day.

Memoree Plaisance, a 10th grade student from Franklinton, was among five winners who participated in the youth day competition.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Endangered Species Coalition, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the International Child Art Foundation proudly announce the winners of the 2013 Endangered
Species Day Youth Art Contest. The art contest is an integral part of the 8th annual national Endangered Species Day on May 17.

NSU Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Choirs to perform April 25

The Natchitoches-Northwestern Symphony Orchestra and NSU Symphony Choirs will perform at 7:30 p.m. on April 25, in Magale Recital Hall. Dr. Douglas Bakenhus will conduct the orchestra. Dr. Burt Allen and Dr. Patrick Dill will conduct the choirs.

Tickets are $10. Northwestern State University, BPCC@NSU and Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts students are admitted free with a current student I.D.

The Mrs. H.D. Dear Sr. and Alice E. Dear School of Creative and Performing Arts is sponsoring a series of Outdoor Chamber Lunch Concerts.
