LA DEQ holding open burning workshop

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality is sponsoring a free workshop to help cities, towns, and the public understand the air quality rules concerning open burning. The session will give a basic understanding of the regulations, and information on open burning do's and don'ts. The meeting will be from 1-3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19 at the Mary Allen State Office Building, 1525 Fairfield Avenue in Shreveport.

The Cane River Green Market will have special activies planned on Saturday, July 16 in celebration of National Watermelon Month.

Some of the activites planned include samples of locally grown watermelons and watermelon punch, and a watermelon eating contest. Prizes will be awarded in the watermelon eating competition.

Lack of rain makes two NW LA parishes available for federal help

Farmers in DeSoto and Sabine Parishes can now get help from the federal government because of drought conditions that have hit the area.

They are two of seven parishes in Louisiana that have been included in a U.S. Department of Agriculture drought disaster declaration.

Cane River Green Market to celebrate Independence Day

The Cane River Green Market will have a special Independence Day celebration on Saturday, July 2. The summertime farmer's market takes place every Saturday through July 30 from 8 a.m. until noon along the riverbank in the Natchitoches Historic District.

Featured activities include a homemade apple bake-off and a “Show Your Patriotism” costume contest. Customers interested in participating in the apple bake-off need to deliver their items to the market hospitality tent by 10:00 a.m. in order to be included in the contest.
