Several NW LA parishes declared disaster areas after April storms

Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M., said United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Tom Vilsack has declared DeSoto and Red River Parishes as primary natural disaster areas due to losses caused by tornadoes that occurred on April 26 and 27.

Bienville, Bossier, Caddo, Natchitoches and Sabine parishes were also declared disaster areas because they are contiguous to the primary disaster locations.

Farmers in DeSoto and Sabine Parishes can now get help from the federal government because of drought conditions that have hit the area.

They are two of seven parishes in Louisiana that have been included in a U.S. Department of Agriculture drought disaster declaration.

DESOTO PARISH, LA (KSLA) – More than 20 families have been forced from their homes because of a woods fire in DeSoto Parish.

The fire is in the Benson Community, located just south of Mansfield in the New Benson and Sam Booker Roads area.

So far those evacuated have found other relatives to stay with. DeSoto deputies are also helping evacuate some elderly residents and those without transportation.

DeSoto Fire District No. 8 has put out a mutual aid request from nearby districts and Sabine Parish.

The Sabine Parish Tourism Commission says the Independence Day Kickoff set for July 1 at Hodges Gardens State Park has been canceled.

The event is now set for Veteran's Day Weekend.

The commission said the postponement was done due to the state's burn ban and at the request of the LA Department of State Parks.

A large, mulit-parish water system has become the latest entity to put a water ban in place because of the region's dry conditions.

The Bayou Pierre Water System covers residents in Red River, Natchitoches, Caddo and DeSoto Parishes. They've put a ban on all outdoor watering, such as watering lawns and gardens, washing cars, and filling pools, until the area gets a significant rainfall.
